Let’s break it down.
Earth Day’s 2025 theme, Our Power, Our Planet, is a call to action for everyone. But one line in particular has a lot of people scratching their heads:
"Tripling clean energy by 2030."
Sounds like a big deal (and it is!), but what does that actually mean? And how does it relate to the choices we make at home?
Let’s unpack it – no jargon, no overwhelm.
What is clean energy?
Clean energy (also called renewable energy) is power that comes from natural sources that won’t run out. Think:
-
Solar power from the sun
-
Wind power from the air
-
Hydro power from moving water
-
Geothermal power from the Earth’s core
Clean energy doesn’t produce the pollution or emissions that fossil fuels (like coal, gas, and oil) do.
So, what does it mean to triple clean energy?
Right now, not enough of our electricity comes from renewable sources. The UN and global leaders have agreed that by 2030, we need to triple the amount of clean electricity we produce.
That means more solar panels, wind farms, and hydro plants around the world. It also means reducing our dependence on polluting fossil fuels.
Tripling clean energy is one of the most impactful things we can do to fight climate change. But it’s not just up to governments or big energy companies – everyday people have power too.
How can you help from home?
While we might not be able to build a wind turbine in the backyard, there’s still so much we can do to reduce our environmental footprint and support the clean energy transition.
Here’s how:
Food scraps in landfill create methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. Composting turns those scraps into nutrient-rich soil.
Less waste = less emissions = less pressure on the planet.
Using Less Energy at Home
Simple swaps like LED bulbs, unplugging devices, or using natural light can reduce your energy use. The less electricity we waste, the easier it is to shift to renewables.
Supporting Sustainable Brands
Every purchase sends a message. Choosing companies that care about the planet (like us!) helps shift demand toward better practices. Rewarding and reinforcing companies that investing in positive change.
Spreading the Word
Sharing facts, starting conversations, and educating others all add up. The more people who understand the issue, the faster change can happen. Education is key!
Most plastic is made from fossil fuels. Cutting down on plastic reduces demand for oil and gas. Switching to reusable and refillable products is a powerful way to vote with your dollars.
Earth Day is a reminder that we don’t need to be perfect to make a difference. We've always believed progress over perfection is the best way to inspire change. From the power in our homes to the choices we make day to day, we all hold a little piece of the solution.
Let’s keep showing up for the planet – in small ways, every day.
