If No One Else Will, Why Bother?

We recently posted on Instagram, asking what your biggest challenges are while creating a plastic-free life and the most common answer was about how the people around us, sometimes family and friends included, don't seem to care much about it. Which often leads to us asking ourselves why bother

Has anyone else asked this valid question while trying to say See Ya to plastic? Both my hands are raised, btw! I won’t even deny wondering, at various points in my journey, what the use of even trying is. It's a little discouraging to be doing your best when those around you don’t seem to care. But despite all this, there is hope. Here's why you should power through:

Change starts at the bottom of the food chain

Going green doesn’t have to happen overnight and it doesn’t have to be too drastic either. As Paul Hawken said, “Real change occurs from the bottom up; it occurs person to person, and it almost always occurs in small groups and locales and then bubbles up and aggregates to larger vectors of change.”

Seed & Sprout has always been on a mission. A mission to discover more of ourselves, inspire a better world and create lasting connections! Remind yourself of the benefits you reap from this lifestyle and you’ll stay motivated. Together, we can make a positive change in the world, and trust me when I say, every bit of effort counts.

You’re in control

Going Zero Waste, or moving towards a more sustainable lifestyle, all starts with a choice. As a matter of fact, it's an everyday choice and you are in the driver’s seat. Admittedly, it can be overwhelming but don’t worry! It’s not a race nor is it a contest. Only you are in control of the change you can do at your own time.

This journey is going to take years of practise - so do the best you can and never beat yourself up! Remember, you’ve got this.

You learn new things

What keeps me motivated to live greener is knowing that I’m trying to work towards positive change, and that I’m learning, growing and improving. Living more sustainably has been an eye-opening journey! Small or big, I learn something new every single day. It has taught me so many things about myself and has helped me rediscover a few hands-on life skills, too!

Change influences change

Whether you notice it or not, your actions will influence some of the people around you. We all want family and friends to support our life choices and join our missions. Of course, we can’t control someone else’s lifestyle, but we can raise awareness and share our stories and enthusiasm.

Reasonably, not everyone will understand you and your motivation and that is totally normal. Don’t fret! Instead, set a good example and live by it! By doing so, you prove that it is not only possible, but it's worth it too.

Once you start, there’s no going back

Once your zero-waste engine starts to run, the tunnel is lit and there’s no looking back. All the changes and choices you continue to make become part of you and the life you live. Embrace it, see just how far you can take it, or settle into it. Either way, it’ll be there to stay.

You just have to keep doing what you do and hope that your friends, family, and/or others sees the benefits and follow suit.  We can only inspire people to make the switch as forcing them to change will have the opposite effect. 🍃🌱

  • Great post!
Everyone is doing the best they can and when we know better we can do better.
That being said I think the truth can trigger people which makes them a bit defensive at first.
I try not to take it personally, smile, mentally wish people well and just do the best I can.
I can’t tell you how many people have been defensive with me initially, due to my change in lifestyle, that later on chilled out and happily told me that I have inspired them to make some positive lifestyle changes too.

  • I love this so much 🙌🏼 It’s so easy for the individual to say that they have no power and it’s the big corporations but the reality is the big corps move with the buying trends of the individual. If we start making small steps towards a more sustainable future big corps will have nowhere to go but in that same direction. Power to the people 🙌🏼
