10 Eco-Friendly Back-To-School Tips

It's back-to-school time! Yes, believe it or not, the holidays are almost over...at least for a lot of kids in Australia! To give you a little assistance on this front, we've come up with a list of 10 eco-friendly tips to get you and your kids ready!

1. Go green on the school commute! Walk with your kids to school, or have them ride their bikes or scooters! This gives you and them a chance to get outdoors and get a little exercise before school starts in the morning and after school gets out. If you can’t go with them, just be sure to find a safe route for them to use.

2. Inventory your school supplies before buying more to also avoid the last-minute impulse purchases. Make a list and stick to it! When you do go out shopping, pick items made from recycled or sustainable materials and look for those with minimal packaging.

3. Let your kids pack a lunch. Getting your kids involved will allow them to choose what they’ll actually eat, avoiding food waste. When kids bring their own lunch, they also tend to make healthier food choices.

4. Skip the plastic bags! Use reusable containers and water bottles to minimise waste. Stainless steel is always a good option as you won’t have to worry about toxins from a plastic bottle seeping into their water.

6. There’s nothing wrong with second hand. This applies to school clothes AND textbooks. This reduces waste and saves a lot of trees!

7. Upcycle last year's supplies instead of buying new! Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.

8. Get creative with organic lunches! Your kids can have the tasty lunches they crave, and you can feel good knowing your children are sticking to your healthy, organic, at-home regimen — even if they’re at school.

9. Follow through and go eco all school year round! Don't stop at the back-to-school craze! The key word in sustainability is sustain.

10. Explain to your kids why you’re making greener, healthier choices. As we’ve mentioned before, it all starts at home. Making planet-friendly choices when getting ready for school is great, but what is even more awesome is teaching your kids not only why we’ve made these choices but that they have the power to make a difference.
